Drug Commercials
October 27, 2024
Old habits die hard, and I admit to belonging to that rare group that still watches network news in the evening. Sure, I see breaking news on my phone, but while cooking supper, it’s just fine to have NBC's Lester Holt in the kitchen with me. Years ago, John Chancellor was like a member of the family.
But if anything would make me stop, it is the incessant and repetitive drug ads. Obviously, the networks know that their watchers are of a certain age. But here’s the thing…
With the exception of New Zealand, the United States is the only country that allows direct drug advertising to consumers.
Don't get me started on why drug ads are a bad idea.
Dear Judy, I totally agree with you! Most of my news now comes from radio because of all the drug ads. And at this time of year the endless political ads interrupt the real news, even my subscriber paid streaming services! We have early voting in Arizona, leave us alone!

I just told my husband to remind me to never read the inserts in drug packaging. According to the ads, which I loathe, every single one is out to kill us.

Here in the UK, ads in magazines pitched at us older readers consist of step-in bathtubs, stairlifts, wheelchairs, incontinence pads and cremation plans!
I was on an internal flight from Chicago to Seattle and picked up a magazine left behind.
I was astonished to see page after page of advertisements for drugs and prescription medicines.
You're right, it's a very US thing.

We also watch the evening news. I go into the (adjoining) kitchen to start cooking dinner when the first commercial runs. I don't miss much news because most of the second 15 minutes is composed of ads. Mostly drug ads for outrageously expensive medications.
